Simplicity Wine & Crêpes

Last Thursday on the day after our big Xmas party, we took our hungover selves in search of comfort food to the newly opened Simplicity Wine & Crêpes (from the team behind FINDs) on Wyndham Street. A crêpe is a French pancake which can be served with either sweet or savoury fillings, and which in France are served as an unpretentious street food to be wolfed down on the go.

Simplicity Wine & Crêpes is a tiny, cosy little cafe opposite Solas and just next to the LKF hotel decorated in neutral, modern colours. They're still waiting for their liquor license to come through, so in the meantime it's BYO if you'd like the enjoy a glass of wine with your meal. The great thing about crêpes is that they are good at any time of day depending on the filling you choose and sensibly Simplicity have decided to open a little window at the front of the cafe so that they can even cater to the 2am punter rolling out of Dragon-I with a growling tum. The Hungry German pancake which is filled with sausage and potato sounds like the perfect late-night stomach-filler!

We tried the regular Ham & Cheese, the Greek and the Hong Kong crêpes. The Ham & Cheese was a bit of a mild child, but the Greek (with feta and spinach) and the Hong Kong (with char sui and hoi sin sauce) really hit the spot. We finished up with one of their destined-to-be-famous Snickers crêpes, which was meltingly delicious. They're obviously still working out some minor kinks in their soft opening period and they'd love your feedback! Stop in to enjoy a crêpe before the 10th December and enjoy a free soft drink with your meal. I'm going to be imagining myself back in the Swiss Alps and enjoying one of their hot chocolates as a winter warmer.

Pssst... they will also be serving up their special french fries to the late-night crowd, so there's no need to go in search of a kebab shop to fulfill your carb craving!

Shake 'Em Buns

Shake 'em Buns was one of the sponsors for our Sexy Xmas party last week - amidst all the chocolate covered strawberries and cupcakes, we knew we needed something super-filling to keep the guys happy. The mini sliders they provided were perfect bite-sized mouthfuls of deliciousness, and provided a great foundation for all the vodka-drinking that went on that night!

Maura and I stopped in to Shake 'em Buns' cafe on the corner of Wellington Street and Pottinger Street last week to try out some items from the menu for ourselves. We'd been running around all morning on an empty stomach and were starting to drool at the idea of a burger lunch. The little cafe is decorated in an American diner-style, with a couple of cosy booths and a row of high stools perched by the window so you can munch happily while watching people make their precarious way down Pottinger. The menu and style of the restaurant is full of funny names (sample burger names are "Missionary", "Gang Bang" and "Cushin' for the Pushin'), signs and humour - upbeat tunes boom out of the sound system, and you can feel your mood get better with every minute inside.

I ordered the Debbie Does Dallas burger, which is essentially a cheeseburger topped with bacon, fried onions and barbeque sauce. It's an oozing, juicy dream of a burger which packs a huge flavour punch. It's not the tidiest thing to eat, so maybe not one to choose if you're on a date. I wolfed it down in about ten seconds flat - you can probably see from my greedy grin in the picture above that it wasn't going to last long! Maura ordered a basket of sliders, which come in several different combos so are great if you can't make up your mind as to what you'd like to try.

There also aren't just burgers on the menu - my husband is OBSESSED with their fried mozzarella sticks, and if you're having a "trying to be healthy" day, I recommend the chicken salad, which unusually for a burger joint actually has very fresh salad.

We'll definitely be stopping into Shake 'em Buns again soon to satisfy our burger cravings!

Harvest Bagels & Cafe

Until now the only place I really knew to go for a good bagel was The Press Room on Hollywood Road. You have to understand that I am a complete bagel snob! The thing I love about The Press Room is that they actually import H&H Bagels from New York. The only problem is The Press Room only serves these dough rings on the weekends. So Monday-Friday I have been out of luck. Thank goodness I can now satisfy my bagel craving anytime thanks to Harvest Bagel & Cafe.

Harvest opened recently on Lyndhurst Terrace. On the menu: bagels, loads of bagels, onion, plain, cinnamon crunch, everything.... I personally love just a plain bagel toasted and smothered with extra cream cheese! By the way, the cream cheese is homemade people. That's right, I said homemade. Flavors include plain, sun dried tomato, black olive, Cajun powder, pineapple, strawberry and even avocado. Guess what? They also make bagel sandwiches to order with all kinds of options from salmon to curried chicken. Also on the menu you'll find a tasty array soups, salads, and smoothies.

Take your bagel to go, or if you have time to sit and unwind Harvest sprawls over two floors. The bottom floor is more like a cafe and upstairs there is plenty of room to dine.

Favourite Winter "Recipe"

For me, winter is really the time for indulgence and a little bit of naughty eating. When I lived in Switzerland I came to associate winter with those warming and sinful cheese dishes like Fondue and Raclette that the Swiss like so much. I even brought my raclette machine with me when I moved to Hong Kong, although it hasn't had an outing yet!

For a little delicious treat at home though, there's nothing better than some steaming hot, molten, oven-baked Camembert, enjoyed with some crusty French bread. It's the perfect comfort food to serve a friend who just happens to pop by around dinner time when the fridge is bare, or curled up on the sofa watching a movie. The funny thing about it is that people actually think it's more impressive than the two minute preparation time - it's all in the styling you know!

Here's how you do it:
Buy a nice ripe camembert that comes in a wooden box (Oliver's and CitySuper have good cheese counters). Open the box and unwrap the cheese. Put the cheese back in the box. Cut a clove of garlic in half and rub over the top of the cheese. Pour a little white wine over the top of the cheese so that it sits on the top. Put the lid of the box back on and place in an oven pre-heated to 200 degrees c or Gas Mark 6 for 10-15 minutes.

Carefully take out of the oven, and serve in the box on a wooden chopping board with some fresh baguette (allow your guests to tear off chunks with their hands). You can also accompany with some cornichons (little gherkins) and mini pickled onions for the authentic twist.

Enjoy!

Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot!

For all you chocoholics out there (I am open about my addiction), if you are looking for a way to stay warm in this ever so cold weather--I have the solution for you in the form of (you guessed it) chocolate!

After work instead of heading home to your -brrrrr cold flat, grab a cab and head straight to The Peninsula Hotel Lobby. I'm sure you've been there for afternoon tea, but I will let you in on a sweet secret, the Peninsula serves the absolute most decadent cup of hot chocolate. Forget about that powdery stuff you just add water to, this is rich, creamy and made from real bars of melted chocolate. I promise this stuff will make you think you've entered chocolate heaven!

Cupcake Fridays

One very Sassy girl, Sabrina, has come up with the most brilliant (not to mention delicious) idea.....CUPCAKE FRIDAYS! She has officially declared Fridays to be the perfect time to catch up with friends after a long week while indulging in yummy cupcakes. Sabrina's exact words "every girl deserves a sweet treat at the end of the week!" Here at Sassy we love cupcakes, in fact, we don't discriminate--- chocolate, vanilla, sprinkled or not, homemade, store bought---whatever! I am definitely going to get on board with Cupcake Fridays. Unfortunately it may be followed up with Sweat Saturday (burning off those calories).....it is soooo worth it though!

Invite Shanghai White to your office for Friday Happy Hour!

What could be a more perfect end to the week than gathering your colleagues around to have some celebratory and free TGIF drinks (well, sloping off to the pub with your mates, but we won't mention that)?!

If you get in quick, and email Rob at CB Fresh (rob@cbfresh.com) you may be able to persuade the CB Fresh crew to bring their cocktail-making prowess to your workplace for free! Their cocktails are all made using Shanghai White vodka, and they will mix them and serve them right at your desk. And did we mention it's free?

It makes us sad Sassy doesn't have an office!

Best Coffee Shops in Hong Kong

Hip Hong Kong have put together a great guide to the best coffee shops in HK - go take a look!. There are definitely a few Sassy favourites in the list, like Cafe Lavande in the picture above where you can sip a latte in a pretty glass and watch all the dogs playing outside, and Pop Bites.

My absolute favourite spot for coffee though is Segafredo Zanetti on Wellington Street, as the coffee is REALLY good. I hear a lot of complaints about the standard of coffee in Hong Kong, and while I'm pretty happy with a Starbucks as long as it has plenty of sugar syrup in it, Segafredo is where I'll head to get a real caffeine fix. They do great cakes there too!

Incredible Edible Creations

What girl wouldn’t love chocolate covered strawberries? The combination of healthy strawberries and indulgent chocolate is a perfect “no guilt” sweet treat in my opinion. We love them here at Sassy - so much so that we will be having them tonight at our Sassy Hour at Otto Lounge. The yummy dessert will be provided by Incredible Edible Creations (IEC) which is the first fresh fruit bouquet company in Hong Kong.

IEC was started by Cheri Keller, who by the way is a very Sassy Lady and loves all things girly. She started it when she realized that no one in Hong Kong was doing fruit baskets in a fun and pretty way. She knew that Hong Kong had a strong tradition of giving fresh fruit or flowers for special occasions so she figured she would combine them both to provide a beautiful statement piece that can be eaten as well!

While we are loving the selection of chocolate covered strawberries that are offered at IEC their specialty is their baskets. Each arrangement is made from the freshest fruit and it is the perfect gift if you are looking for something a little bit unique. I think the baskets would be perfect for a baby shower, bridal shower or a girly afternoon tea.

Check out IEC’s website and see what amazing things you can do with fruit. You can place an order by phone, fax or email and they offer free delivery!

Come stop by Otto Lounge tonight to sample IEC’s delicious chocolate covered strawberries because we have a feeling that you will love them!

P.S. One lucky girl will win a voucher for a free fruit basket at Sassy Hour Tonight!

Restaurant Review: Angelini at Kowloon Shangri-La

Last Friday lunchtime saw us heading over to TST for lunch at Angelini restaurant at the Kowloon Shangri-La. We were invited to try their special tasting menu to celebrate the 4th Anniversary of the restaurant and were very excited. We have to admit, we are very bad girls when it comes to leaving Hong Kong Island - we tend to view "the other side" as halfway across the world, rather than the 10 minute MTR journey it is in reality. Because of this, we had a vacation-like feeling as we took the Star Ferry over.

Angelini's is on the first floor of the hotel, and is one of an amazing seven restaurants on the premises. Lunch-time trade was booming, and the tables lining the windows which offer a stunning view of Victoria Harbour were all packed. We briefly met Italian Chef Vittorio, who reassured us that he would make all the portions small for us, probably assuming we are the perma-diet kind of girls. As we're definitely not, we asked him please not to shrink our food!
We started the meal with a Carpaccio of Bluefin Tuna, Salmon and Sea Bass which was heavenly and the perfect light way to begin a heavy lunch. When the pasta course arrived afterwards, we knew we were really in for the full Italian experience. The home-made Torcetti Pasta was unfortunately a little over-cooked, as I like my pasta al dente. Accompanied by Sardinian Shrimp and a Saffron and Parsley Purée, it was nevertheless delicious.

We then moved onto a fish course, which was a perfectly sautéed piece of Sea Bass sitting on a ratatouille-style sauce of Courgette, Aubergine and Sea Urchin. I have to admit, I'm not sure I would ever be able to identify the taste of Sea Urchin! The sauce was the ideal tangy compliment to the soft, subtle flavours of the Sea Bass.

We finished our savoury courses by sharing a New Zealand Lamb Rack with Pistachio Crust and White Polenta, and a Braised Pork Short Ribs with a Green Apple and Cucumber Salad. It was a tough call, but we think the Pork may have just beaten the Lamb Rack (top image) by an inch. This is great hearty autumnal food, and watching the rain lash down outside made me feel like we were actually going to step out into a brisk, cold day.

Finally came the piece de resistance - a Moscato Wine Cream with Blueberry Sorbet and Meringue that was like eating sweet, creamy air. This was definitely the absolute highlight of the meal and being so light, didn't give us the bloated feeling one can get from too much food at lunchtime.

We particularly recommend Angelini for a great business lunch or dinner option on Kowloon side. The service is impeccable and the food quality very high. Until the end of September, the set dinner is available at HK$680 per person.

Happy Anniversary RED Bar + Restaurant

At Sassy we love a celebration and this week we will be toasting RED Bar + Restaurant as they celebrate their 5-year Anniversary! RED Bar + Restaurant is one of our favourite places in town and we have had many days which end by enjoying the restaurants amazing panoramic views while we nibble on the delicious quesadillas (our absolute fav!) and a glass (or two, or three!) of wine.

While we should be gifting RED Bar + Restaurant for all the amazing dinners and drinks they have served us over the past years they are actually giving us a gift! From September 14-20th RED Bar + Restaurant will be giving 25% off all food and drinks. This gift is available to everyone, which means whether you are a Pure Cardholder or not you can enjoy this great discount. Just thinking about RED Bar + Restaurant already has us craving the amazing California cuisine that is their signature style.

We totally enjoy the chilled out vibe that RED has the majority of the time but we also love it when the DJs come out and work their magic to create a party like atmosphere. There is nothing like sitting outside and having a drink while listening to the hottest DJs in town. To further celebrate their anniversary RED will have a special DJ evening on Friday September 18th. Leading DJs, DJ Gruv and DJ Dim Sum will be spinning all evening long and help us all thank RED for a great 5 years. Happy Anniversary RED!

Sassy Addresses: Assaf Lebanese Cuisine

The other night at Sassy Hour I was talking to one of our Sassy members about the Sassy Belly Dance class we had at the end of July. We talked about how fun the class was and we remembered how delicious the wonderful Lebanese appetizers were from Assaf Lebanese Cuisine. Well, that was on Thursday night and all weekend long I could not get Assaf's out of my mind. The plan was to go for lunch after Pilates on Saturday but my husband and I arrived a little too early and realized that it didn't open until 12pm. We were starving so we ventured off to somewhere else to feed our empty stomachs with the promise to ourselves that we would go back on Sunday.

We did return and we are so happy we went back because the food was so yummy. We decided to have an early dinner and because of this we were lucky enough to have the whole place to ourselves. The restaurant is so cozy and the music they play really made me feel as if I were on holiday in Lebanon. We ordered the hummous to start and basically devoured it. We then moved on to the Sujuk (spicy Lebanese sausages), which was our absolute favorite part of the meal. For our main course we both had kebabs and I honestly didn't think I could put another thing into my stomach but then the opportunity to have some baklava presented itself and we could not resist!

Also, for you night owls out there...I have heard from many people over the past few months that Beyrouth Cafe (which is right next to Assaf and owned by the Assaf brothers) is the place to go for a late night kebab. I know I will be going here the next time I am out late and need a little something before heading home!

Battle of the Fro-Yos

Hong Kong has been swept by frozen yoghurt fever as brands looking to replicate Pinkberry's overwhelming success (but not subsequent recent decline) take over the town. In the past week I have finally been persuaded to give this dessert craze a try, previously being a strongly committed ice cream girl! I guess I like my puddings and sweets so much, and enjoy them as a treat, that I don't really see a whole lot of point in trying low fat or lower calorie alternatives when there's no way they can taste so good, right?

Well, in a lot of ways, frozen yoghurt (obviously) is not as good as ice cream, having that yoghurty tang which is hard to get used to. However, surprisingly for me, the texture is smooth, light and creamy and the innovative range of toppings that the new chains are offering mean that you can really infinitely customize your snack.

We started off at Berrygood, which is the original for Hong Kong as the first to launch here. Located just off Hollywood Road in Central, their shop is teeny-tiny, with a little eating area where you can perch on hot pink banquettes while enjoying the frozen yoghurt. We sampled Original flavor (a plain creamy yoghurty taste) and Pomegranate, their flavour of the day which tasted strangely like Strawberry. Refreshing and delicious topped with chocolate sauce and chopped nuts, you definitely see how you can quickly offset any health benefits by loading up on toppings. Berrygood froyo was a big hit with us, and we left commenting how nice it was to abandon the usual Starbucks and Mix run for something different.
Last night I headed to Ship Street for dinner (stunning recommendation of Rokkaku by a friend), and afterwards wandered around the back streets of Wanchai for a while before stumbling on Yo Mama. I am such a sucker for cute branding that I was instantly excited to try. I've seen that their shop in IFC is opening soon, and so was keen to get a preview of what will be on offer. Yo Mama was really buzzing with mostly groups of girls sitting and chatting in the elevated mezzanine cafe area. It was interesting that the bars around were almost empty - could people really be shunning alcohol for frozen yoghurt?

We tried Original and Green Tea flavor, of which a little sign said that the Original was sweetened with Splenda. We topped our pots with chocolate sauce, toasted coconut, strawberries and crushed Oreos. Unfortunately the toasted coconut was a little like sawdust, and kept catching in my throat! Overall, Yo Mama was definitely not as good as Berrygood - there just wasn't any depth of flavour, and for me the yoghurt wasn't sweet enough. I'd rather have the sugar and enjoy it more.

We still need to try Yoghurtime in Soho, which I'm excited for as they break out of the Pinkberry model, and have around 100 flavours. We'll keep you posted on whether it can beat Berrygood!

Jamie Oliver in Hong Kong

Jamie Oliver will be launching a "Jamie's Italian" restaurant in Hong Kong in Spring/Summer of 2010, and we're definitely looking forward to it! We feel like there's a bit of a gap in the market for a mid-range Italian - Isola and Tuscany by H make sure the higher end is well covered. The price range is likely to be around HK$300 per head for a starter, main course and glass of wine - pretty reasonable!

There are currently 5 branches of Jamie's Italian in the UK - it is amazing how Jamie is heading for world domination! You can also buy his eponymous line of food products in Olivers in Central.

Having cooked some recipes from Jamie's Italian cookbook, I'll be excited to try this new restaurant. The cookbook is full of rustic treats, and the risotto section in particular is excellent.

We'll keep you posted as soon as we hear more news on where the restaurant will be located.

Rabbit Food

Apart from Dressed in IFC, which is great, it can be hard to find tasty, fresh and affordable salad options in Hong Kong. Which is why we're thrilled to have found this article in the New York Times listing 101 recipes for Simple Salads. The best part is that they're not even really recipes, just serving suggestions containing few ingredients and simple preparations. Print it out and stick it on your fridge - there are some unusual combinations, and plenty of vegan and veggie suggestions too. Bon Appetit!

Need a coffee fix- Starbucks now Delivers!

As I was walking home from dinner last night I passed one of my favorite Starbucks and the above sign caught my eye -- Starbucks now delivers!! We live in a world where even McDonalds delivers so I am not sure why I was so surprised to see this. While I am excited about the fact that I can now have my Grande Skim Vanilla Latte delivered right to my door there is something that makes me happy about going into a coffee shop and ordering a coffee to be enjoyed either in the shop or as I am walking around the busy streets of Hong Kong.

I am curious to see how fast they deliver since coffee is meant to be hot - guess I will just have to call the delivery hotline and put in my order to see!

Anyone up for a Margarita? It is Cinco de Mayo!

Today is Cinco de Mayo, which is a Mexican holiday that celebrates the victory of Mexican peasants over the French in 1862. Cinco de Mayo is actually more celebrated in the United States than it is in Mexico and these days it is often taken as another excuse to gather with friends to drink Margaritas and eat guacamole with chips. Since I love Mexican food and simply adore Margarita's I thought I would dedicate this post to where to find Mexican food here in Hong Kong. Below are some restaurants that you can go to when you are craving a little taste of Mexico!
  • Agave (33 D'Aguilar Street, LKF)
  • Izote (55 D'Aguilar Street, LKF)
  • Coyote Bar and Grill (114-120 Lockhart Road, Wanchai)
  • Caramba (26-30 Elgin Street, Soho)
  • El Taco Loco (9 Staunton Street, Soho
  • Tequila (11 Old Bailey Street, Soho)
This year instead of going out to eat for Cinco de Mayo, I am going to plan a Mexican themed dinner at home. I am trying to take a healthier approach to dinner tonight so here are some tips that I plan to use to help make a yummy but healthy Mexican feast!
  • Skip the refined tortilla shells and use whole-wheat tortillas instead. Better yet, I may go the low carb route and use lettuce to make lettuce wraps
  • Use chicken instead of beef in my tacos
  • Substitute whole black or pinto beans for refried beans
  • I love the word moderation so even though I am trying to keep it healthy I still need to have my cheese and guacamole, so for me moderation is the key with these two!
  • Finally, I am going to make a Skinnygirl Margarita, which is the signature drink of Bethenny from the Real Housewives of NYC. Check out her website for the recipe!
Whether you decide to stay in or go out I wish you a happy Cinco de Mayo!

Restaurant Review: Tandoor

A windy, rainy Saturday night found my husband and I having one of our favourite conversations - where to have dinner? After listing the usual options we found that we were both having a similar craving for Indian food, and so decided to strike out and try something new (Nepal is usually our go-to option). We found Tandoor listed online, and as it's conveniently located on Lyndhurst Terrace, it sounded like the perfect option... especially as I could argue that it's just about far enough from our apartment to justify taking a taxi!

Tandoor is on the first floor of Lyndhurst Tower, which is right on the corner of Lyndhurst and Wellington, and you really can't miss Tandoor because of the neon sign and turban-ed doorman standing outside. Heading up one flight of stairs to the restaurant, you feel like you've been transported... right to London! There's a mainly Western crowd, though some Indian customers also, which we hoped was a good sign. On Saturday nights they have live music on a small raised stage at the front of the room which makes for a great atmosphere. The only downside for us was that in between the performances they would lower a big screen and show live cricket matches with the sound on, which made it feel a bit more like a pub than a restaurant. We ordered a selection of appetizers which were totally delicious, and they provide a little selection of chutneys and raita.

For our main dishes we had a Rogan Josh (lamb curry) and Tikka Paneer (cottage cheese roasted with vegetables with a tikka flavouring), and some rice and peshwari naan bread. Everything was extremely tasty and not greasy at all. They had a small selection of wines by the glass, and a larger selection of beers. They also offered something called a Vodka Red Bull Boat, which sounded a bit scary - probably one for the "lads"!

Overall, Tandoor is a great option if you're simply craving a yummy curry in pleasant surroundings, with good service. The live music at weekends is a nice touch, and I can imagine if you were to go as a group before a night out it would really hit the spot. It isn't anything super-exceptional, but we enjoyed ourselves and the bill was reasonable - around $550 for two including one glass of wine.

Dressed- Salads with Style

I have officially discovered my new fave salad restaurant, and I must share it with all of you. Dressed- Salads with Style. Healthy and delicious salads designed by you! Basically, Dressed offers an extensive range of greens, toppings, and dressings. You select the ingredients for your perfect salad, Dressed makes it then and there. The best part is they mix all the ingredients and chop away. I don't know about you, but I find a salad much better with the toppings and dressing all mixed up rather than just laying over the bed of lettuce! Should you prefer, Dressed can take your creation and put it into a flat-bread wrap (great if you are eating on-the-go). Also on the menu, fruit, soups, and crisps.

On Sunday, my husband and I dined at the IFC Mall location. My fabulous creation consisted of iceberg lettuce topped with avocado, black beans, chickpeas, crispy Chinese noodles, cucumbers, kalamata olives, red onions, crumbled feta cheese, grilled chicken, chopped and mixed with the Asian dressing. Absolutely delicious...and big enough to last me two meals! I also had the chicken noodle soup, which was quite tasty. My husband created more of a Chinese chicken salad, iceberg lettuce, red onions, mandarin oranges, cripy Chinese noodles, cucumbers, chopped and mixed with the Asian dressing.

You can check out Dressed at IFC Mall, Level 2, Shop 2016, or QRE, Shop 1, G/F, 202 Queen's Road East, Wanchai.
